• Ende des Jahres: Nach dem Tod Chlothars I. wird das Frankenreich unter seine vier Söhne aufgeteilt: Charibert I. erhält den Reichsteil mit der Residenz Paris, Guntchramn wird König in Orléans, Sigibert I. wird König in Reims und Chilperich I. in Soissons. Mit der Aufteilung wird die Grundlage für den Merowingischen Bruderkrieg gelegt.
• Reiterkrieger der Awaren, eines Turkvolks aus Zentralasien, überqueren auf dem Balkan die Donau; nur durch hohe Geldzahlungen kann Kaiser Justinian I. ihre Ansiedlung auf dem Reichsgebiet verhindern.

• Der aus Gandhara stammende Mönch Jnanagupta übersetzt buddhistische Texte in die chinesische Sprache.

Christentum

• 17. Juli: Johannes III. wird Papst als Nachfolger von Pelagius I.
• In der Hauptstadt des Suebenreiches halten die Bischöfe die erste Synode von Braga ab.
